Parish Life

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us..." (John 1:14). Jesus Christ became a human being at a specific time and in a concrete place. And yet His actions-above all His Death and Resurrection for the forgiveness of sins-have affected the whole human race for all time. What one person does locally can make a profound difference for others.

As disciples of Jesus Christ, who possess His Holy Spirit, we seek to live out our faith in concrete ways. We believe that God can use our prayers, words, and actions to continue the work of Jesus, and so make a difference for others-indeed, for the world.

Listed below are the many ways we try to live out our faith here in this parish. You are invited to learn more about these ministries which, thanks to the Holy Spirit, are flourishing at St. Anne. You are welcome to offer your gifts and talents to Lord in this holy work.

Liturgical ministries "There are different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different ministries but the same Lord; there are different works but the same God...To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." (1 Corinthians. 12:4-7)

We invite you to participate as a liturgical minister in the following areas:

(if you have any questions, please contact Richard Davis, Director of Liturgy & Music, at the parish office, 276-669-8200, ext. 24)

"Unity in prayer and in the active participation in the celebration of the divine mysteries in the Church's liturgy contributes in an especially effective way to the wealth of Christian life of both the individual and the community." (Pope John XXIII)

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for liturgy Extraordinary Ministers assist at Mass in the distribution of the Precious Body and Blood. Training is provided in the fall of the year.

To serve in this ministry, you must be a practicing Catholic, age 16 or older, who has been Confirmed, and must presently be in Full Communion with the Catholic Church. We strongly encourage returning Extraordinary Ministers to attend training every year.

Teens who are at least age 16+ and have been Confirmed or are participating in their 2nd year of Confirmation preparation may also serve as Lectors at Mass.

Altar Server Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass. Children and Teens and Adults (age 10 and above) who are practicing Catholics and who have received their First Holy Communion, may train as Servers. ALL Servers, new and returning, are to attend one of the training sessions.

Thurifer Adults and Teens (Grade 7+) may serve as a Thurifer. Thurifers assist the priest at major liturgies and funerals with the incensation. They must be practicing Catholics who have received their First Holy Communion.

Mass Coordinator Mass Coordinators are of vital importance to our liturgical celebrations. They assume responsibility for setting up for the liturgies (getting the vessels in place, etc.), as well as being sure that the other liturgical ministers (EMHC's, Lectors, Servers, etc.) have arrived. Mass Coordinators work closely with the Pastor and the Director of Liturgy & Music. Mass Coordinators need to be familiar with the guidelines and procedures for the other liturgical ministries. Training is provided for those who are willing to volunteer in this capacity.

Altar Server Coordinator Adults are needed who are willing to assist our young servers before liturgy.

Ushers Ushers serve as greeters before Mass, hand out worship aids, assist people find seats when the church is crowded, take up the collection, guide communion lines, and hand out bulletins at the end of Mass.

Choir (Adult/Teen & Children) & Musicians Music is an integral and essential part of the worship life of our community! Adult Choir is open to adults and teens in Grade 9-12. The Choir rehearses generally on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. (Except in the summer when the choir takes a well-deserved "break"!)

A Children's Choir (Gr. 3-8) sings for Christmas & Easter.

Gift Bearers and Cross Bearer for Liturgy The Mass Coordinator finds people before each liturgy for these tasks. If you might be interested in bringing up the gifts at the Offertory, or be our Cross Bearer, please let us know!!

Environment/Worship Committee Volunteers are needed to help prepare the church space for the different liturgical seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter and for special feasts (Pentecost, etc.). Mailings are sent to committee members notifying them of the date/time for "decorating". If you would be willing to help in this capacity, your help would be appreciated!
